Four new flicks join the fray this week, including the first ever film in the history of COVID-19 to debut online the same day it was supposed to be in theaters: Trolls World Tour. It's a hit on iTunes and apparently on bit torrent. Other new films in the list include Ip Man 4, Gretel & Hansel, and My Spy.
Dave “Drax” Bautista continues his journey into becoming the modern-day Schwarzenegger as the muscle-bound action star who can be funny. This time he teams up with a child, playing a demoted CIA agent who gets blackmailed into “training” the little girl whose family he’s surveilling.
9. Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn
Margot Robbie returns to the role of the Joker’s (now ex) girlfriend, Harley Quinn, in time to team up with a few other DC Comic’s ladies as they fight to save a girl from the clutches of Ewan McGregor as he chews all the scenery in sight.
Former vampire Kristen Stewart tries to re-invent herself as an action hero in this tale about ocean researchers at the bottom of the Mariana Trench trying to survive an earthquake…or something worse.
Vin Diesel plays another comic-book-hero tough guy, this one who gets experimented on with nanotech that can heal his body and let him shapeshift. If he shifted into Groot it would really be something.
6. Sonic the Hedgehog
It pays to listen to the internet sometimes, otherwise this film would feature a far-too-human looking Sonic instead of this version which was reanimated to look like the classic game-style Sonic. It helped make this film a big opening weekend success. It probably wasn’t Jim Carrey.
The fourth film in the series to star Donnie Yen (known to many Americans for starring in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is far from the only franchise of portrayals of the real-life legendary Wing Chun martial artist. It’s not even the most recent. But it should be the last for Donnie, since (SPOILER) his character dies at the end of this, just like the real Ip did back in 1972.
4. The Gentlemen
Guy Ritchie returns to English crime (after a quick visit to Disneyland to direct Aladdin) with this tale of a cannabis king trying to sell his business while being blackmailed.
Just a few years ago, this old folklore tale was turned into a superhero-esque fantasy film. Now the story of two kids who meet a witch gets back to its much more disturbing horror roots, looking more like The Witch than The Avengers. That witch they meet is Star Trek’s former Borg queen Alice Krige, so it's perfect casting.
2. Trolls World Tour
This sequel, starring Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake as animated trolls, recently became the first film to get a digital debut on the same day it should have been released in theaters. The world’s quarantined digital pirates wasted no time trolling by making it an instant illegal download hit as well.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence team up for a third go as the Miami detectives who are such bad boys they're always finding extra trouble.
I enjoyed My Spy, feel free to drop the movies you have been watching under this lockdown.
