Rape is the abduction of someone (mostly females) for sexual purposes. In our contemporary world today, we find out that it is not only a woman that gets raped, it happens to men also but any sex act forced on another person is definitely RAPE!!!!!! No other word can qualify it so I’ll define rape as the type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other types of sexual penetration carried out against the victim’s will/consent. In short words rape is a non consensual sex.
In Nigeria today, rape is such an unfortunate rampant incident that could cause the victim to go through a lot of emotional trauma which mostly causes low self esteem, depression, disturbed sleep, negativity, fear, anger, anxiety, isolation, hostility, death(mostly suicidal), addictions to alcohol or other bad habits and many more havocs… though the anger of the victim could be justified by the fact that they want justice, it could as well cause a permanent psychological damage to the victim if care isn’t taken which is why right now I want to briefly talk about DEPRESSION
‘So what is depression by the way?’
DEPRESSION is a feeling of unhappiness, severe despondency, and dejection which brings about low morale in a person. Depression is the first thing a victim suffers after rape and the worst feeling the victim should ever have to go through alone. Depression goes beyond moodiness, it is a mental illness that affects the way one thinks, acts, speaks, feel, relate to issues, and even behave generally which can eventually lead to emotional and physical problems.
It doesn’t help that in the society today, rape has become a catastrophic incident that has been handled with a high level of disregard, it hurts even more that only a few of these rape cases gets to court and gets the deserved justice for the victim.
Furthermore, I’d like to bring to our notice that being raped is never the victim’s fault, you telling a woman to dress decently to avoid rape is like telling people not to earn money because of robbers, the robbers should be stopped not your earnings same as the rapists should be stopped not the victim’s choice of clothes. As mentioned earlier, rape isn’t ‘sex’ between two people as long as there was no mutual agreement between both parties before the iniquitous act took place irrespective of what the victim was wearing, I’m not encouraging ladies to wear seductive clothes to attract men but at the same time I still maintain the fact that the victim’s choice of clothes is not an excuse for the rapist to carry out such salacious and filthy act. Do you know anyone that has been raped and you treated harshly, have u stopped for a second to imagine how much the victim suffers silently because they’ve been threatened or intimidated by the rapist to keep quiet, how they miss sleeps because of nightmares or over brooding and still can’t voice out, have u for a second imagine how the fear of rejections shut them up and deprive them of the justice and happiness they deserve, have u ever for once stopped to think it could have been you, why don’t you just try to have yourself in their shoes, have you ever imagined for once imagined the pain and humiliation they felt when they chose to voice out before you either rejected or blamed them
Have you ever been raped or you know someone who was raped? Then read further please
Rape in Nigeria is a crime and if you’ve been raped or sexually assaulted, then you should not suffer in silence, if you are a victim you should report the matter to ensure that the person is punished, and ensure that the person does not get an opportunity to do it to someone else again in the future. You know what it feels like to be forcefully laid and raped, do you want someone to go through the same pain you went through or even worse?, you should speak to someone about it now, you might be the courage someone somewhere needs to get free of these emotional bondage and speak to someone too, don’t suffer in silence, you don’t have to kill yourself or pay for the sins of someone else(the rapist) while they roam about freely, you also deserve happiness, you deserve freedom from isolation and depression, you deserve to be free from the bondage of fear, take a bold step out, you don’t have to wait till matters gets worse before you report that neighbor, uncle, man or woman that is sexually harassing you to the appropriate authorities, you don’t have to wait till the sexual penetration happens, molestation, harassments and assaults can be duly reported too, touching of your private part by anyone that shouldn’t be allowed to should be reported, don’t listen to their threats, you were created for better things in life than being a sexual object to anyone, don’t go into prostitution using the fact that you were raped as an excuse, you might have been raped physically, but it’s left to you not to allow yourself get deprived of the good life that you deserve, don’t rape yourself emotionally too… voice out
Reporting rape can be a very emotional and difficult thing to do, so you should consider getting support from organisations or security agencies (eg the police), don’t remain quiet, speak to someone about it… you’re a light, don’t give room for intimidation, you’re destined for great things, what more could you be scared of than the heartbreak you feel already, isn’t it better to die a hero than live a pained coward for the rest of your life?
Think about it
Say no to rape
Let ur voice be heard
